About the AD-5
The plan is for a Douglas AD-5 Skyraider. The Skyraider was first designed as a single seat attack aircraft but evolved into the AD-5 with side by side seating when the Navy desired a single hunter, killer anti submarine aircraft. The original Skyraider fuselage was widened from the wing leading edge to the trailing edge to accommodate two pilots. The fuselage was also lengthened by 1 foot 11 inches. The side dive brakes were eliminated and the vertical tail surface area was increased over 50 percent. The AD-5 Skyraider was used by the U.S. Navy, U.S. Air Force, and the Vietnam Air Force allowing for many different color schemes and markings. The AD-5 carried all of the same ordinance loads that the other Skyraider variants were capable of carrying. The large area behind the pilot seats could be configured to carry passengers, extra fuel, or litters.
The prototype plane is modeled after an AD-5 that was stationed at NAS Grosse Isle Michigan in 1952. This aircraft was later transferred to the U.S. Air Force and saw service in Vietnam.
